Design Don't
My favorite author is John Green, so I was ecstatic when I found out they were making his books into movies. This past summer, Paper Towns was released in theaters. I kept up with all the news leading up to the movie release, and I have to say I was a little disappointed when they revealed the movie poster. It displays the two main characters' faces side by side, with Margo's hair blowing over Q's face. This takes up the majority of the space on the poster, with a light blue background above their heads and the movie information below. When I first saw this, I wasn't sure if it was the actual official movie poster. To me, it looked too plain and didn't reveal anything about what the movie was about. To be fair, the poster for The Fault in Our Stars (2014) was designed similarly, so in keeping with the theme of the previous film I can understand the choice, but I felt like there were other ways to go about it. I thought it could have displayed a road map in some way, since that is a major element of the story, or just have the framing adjusted. In my eyes, the design for this poster was a Design Don't.

Ikenberry
Design Do
I work in the Ikenberry Dining Hall, so over the past couple weeks, I've become pretty familiar with it. Overall, I find the dining hall to be designed fairly well. When you walk in, you have open space to walk around and explore the options. You don't feel cramped or pressured trying to decide what you want to eat. Four different stations line the right side of the hall, giving a buffet line effect. In the middle is a circular salad and deli bar, which I was immediately drawn to. The circular shape is visually intriguing and opens up a lot of room, rather than it taking up a block of space. Ikenberry is the largest dining hall in the country, aside from military dining halls. I believe that it was able to achieve that status due to thoughtful and innovative designing.

Dorm Pipe
Design Don't
In my dorm room, there is a random pipe against the back wall where the windows are. I don't understand the purpose of this pipe, so I don't understand why it should be there. It makes the room look less aesthetically pleasing, since a pipe is just sticking out from the wall. To make matters worse, it isn't even centered to the wall. It is closer to the left window than it is to the right one. For the OCD in some people, this would be infuriating. Since the function is unclear and it isn't centered, I believe this to be a bad example of design.

English Building

One of my favorite buildings on campus is the English Building. Since my major is Creative Writing, I know I'll be spending a lot of time in there. I've only been inside a few rooms, but on the outside, the building is beautiful. On the side facing the quad, huge white pillars are spaced evenly with the doors. This reminds me of Greek/Rome style architecture, which I find very architecturally interesting. Lining the building is a row of hedges, which give the building a nice feeling. The building is made of bricks, which I think is what the classic college building looks like, with white trimming. This looks very clean and neat. Overall I love looking at this building, and I think it is designed very well.

Surveying Building
Design Don't
On my walk to the Ikenberry Dining Hall where I work, I always see a design flaw that frustrates me. On Gregory Dr., the Surveying Building juts out onto the sidewalk, making the sidewalk half of the size it should be. The majority of sidewalks around campus are quite wide, to accommodate for the amount of students walking. However in this spot, the sidewalk only allows for one way traffic. The Surveying Building should have been designed better to avoid this issue. I find it ironic how the building for planning out where things should be built has so been so poorly planned out.
